A severe crisis has struck the Honda factory team ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix weekend at Phillip Island, leaving Luca Marini as their sole representative on the grid as the squad grapples with an unprecedented wave of injuries and illness.
Factory team-mate Joan Mir has now missed four consecutive grands prix as he continues to search for the root cause and solution to his ongoing chronic fatigue issues. "Joan Mir and his medical team are hard at work to return the #36 to the circuit but have deemed the Australian GP in Phillip Island too early and will continue to assess his condition," Honda stated.
The situation has been heavily compounded by the complete unavailability of Honda's test rider stable, with every single reserve option currently sidelined due to their own physical setbacks. Taka Nakagami fractured his collarbone during a Motegi wildcard appearance, while Aleix Espargaro aggravated his physical condition during a 2027 prototype test at Sepang, requiring immediate surgery for arm pump in Spain.

Despite World Superbike racer Somkiat Chantra previously stepping in at Motegi, he was not called upon for Phillip Island despite concluding his own championship campaign at Jerez last weekend. This leaves the Japanese manufacturer completely devoid of any test or replacement riders for the upcoming round.
While MotoGP regulations technically mandate teams to field a replacement if more than 10 days pass between driver unfitness and the next event, the punishing physical demands of modern sprint weekends have forced enforcement to ease. The cascading injuries across multiple teams underline the brutal physical toll of the 2026 season.
