TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Fernando Alonso suffered a curtailed qualifying at Monza

Fernando Alonso's truncated qualifying at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix was caused by a power unit issue, Honda has confirmed. Abnormal behaviour detected in his engine forced the Aston Martin driver to cut short his Q1 session at Monza.

Despite managing just one flying lap, the two-time world champion still outpaced teammate Lance Stroll by a tenth of a second, leaving Aston Martin at the back of the grid in 21st and 22nd.

Power Unit Crisis Leads to Pit Lane Start

Honda and Aston Martin issued a joint statement explaining the issue, revealing that abnormal behaviour was found in some components of Alonso's power unit. This prevented him from completing a final run in qualifying.

As a result, overnight repairs were carried out on his AMR26, forcing Alonso to start the race from the pit lane. It is a major setback for Aston Martin as they struggle for competitiveness on Monza's high-speed layout.

Alonso Resigned, Stroll Sets Unwanted Record

Alonso admitted he expected Monza to be tough, noting that more straights mean more difficulties for his team. He pointed to Las Vegas as the next similar challenge but said the engine problem simply made his qualifying short.

Meanwhile, Stroll set an unwanted record by becoming the first F1 driver in history to be eliminated in Q1 100 times, adding to Aston Martin's misery on a challenging weekend.
