Hinchcliffe Questions Wolff's 'Telling' Plan to Consult Antonelli's Father

Former IndyCar driver turned Formula 1 pundit James Hinchcliffe has questioned why Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff would consult Kimi Antonelli's father over the team's potential power unit penalties later this season. The move, according to Hinchcliffe, is unusual and raises questions about the team's decision-making process.

Antonelli currently leads the drivers' championship with 219 points, holding a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton in second after six victories in the opening half of the season. His teammate, George Russell, sits a further nine points behind Hamilton in third. Mercedes, however, is preparing for tactical grid drops in the final 12 rounds.

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, host Tom Clarkson referenced Wolff's comments from the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. Wolff indicated that Mercedes would likely take engine penalties and suggested doing so at the Italian Grand Prix, Antonelli's home race, to relieve pressure on the 19-year-old. But he added that he would discuss the matter with Antonelli's father, Marco.

"What I find interesting about that scenario is that Toto said in his quote, 'Yeah, we're going to consult Marco Antonelli about it, his dad.' And I thought to myself, why on earth is the driver's father having an input on power unit penalties?" Hinchcliffe said.

The former IndyCar driver acknowledged that the logic might stem from managing the intense pressure on the young Italian at his home grand prix. "But it could be for that reason, right? Maybe he's like, 'Do you think this will help Kimi's approach to the weekend knowing he's going in on the back foot and that takes a bit of the expectation away and the pressure off?' But I thought that was a very telling comment," he added.

The decision has sparked debate because it involves non-technical factors in team strategy. While taking a penalty at a home race could ease the burden on a young driver, involving family members in technical decisions might be seen as crossing professional boundaries.

Mercedes has yet to confirm when exactly they will take the penalty. The decision could play a crucial role in the championship battle, with Antonelli still comfortably leading the standings.
