Hamilton: 'Zandvoort Sprint Quali Was a Total Disaster'

Zandvoort was supposed to be the stage for Lewis Hamilton to chase his first-ever win at the Dutch seaside circuit. But Friday turned into a nightmare. In the Sprint Qualifying session, the Ferrari driver could only manage seventh place – a result that clearly disappointed the team and fans alike.

This morning's free practice session had offered a glimmer of hope. Hamilton looked competitive, showing promising pace. But once the green lights came on for qualifying, everything changed. “It was a total disaster,” he said with frustration to Sky Sports F1, admitting the team has a lot of work to do to understand what went wrong.

There was a significant change in the Ferrari garage: mechanics fitted a new floor on both SF-26 cars just before qualifying. This move is suspected to be the culprit behind the loss of performance. However, the Maranello-based team has yet to confirm whether the new floor is the main reason Hamilton dropped to seventh.

With this result, Hamilton's chances of claiming a maiden win at Zandvoort in the Sprint are slim. He will have to start from a less-than-ideal position, and with the narrow and difficult-to-overtake track, his mission becomes even tougher. However, the seven-time world champion is not ready to give up just yet.

“We'll check the data and make a decision. We just need to examine the data and understand why this session didn't go well,” Hamilton said. He stressed that the team will thoroughly evaluate before the Sprint, including reconsidering the car setup.

This failure is certainly a blow for Ferrari, which is striving to perform consistently at the front. The big question now is: will the new floor be kept or discarded? This decision will be crucial for Hamilton's fate for the rest of the weekend, including tomorrow's main qualifying.
