Lewis Hamilton has revealed that talks with Ferrari following his collision with teammate Charles Leclerc at the Italian Grand Prix are focused on a "longer-term process." The contact occurred at the Rettifilo chicane on lap one, sending Hamilton into the gravel and dropping him down the order. He eventually recovered to finish seventh, a result that left his slim Formula 1 championship hopes in tatters.
This incident is not the first for Ferrari this season. Earlier in Zandvoort, the team failed to execute team orders properly, raising questions about operational consistency. Hamilton acknowledges that big changes don't happen overnight. "It's a longer-term process. There are so many moving parts, there are a lot of people, there's a culture that's been there for a long, long time, so moving the big pieces is not so easy and we're just taking one step at a time," he said.
As poor as Sunday's race was, things could have been far worse for Ferrari. In qualifying, Hamilton avoided dropping out in Q2 by just 0.001s, with Leclerc safe by only 0.008s. This highlights the fine margins in F1 and the competitiveness of the grid.
After the race, Hamilton and Leclerc held internal discussions to prevent a repeat of such errors. "Starting from Monday, we just had a clear-out discussion, and naturally, we're focused on that, and that's the positives to working through the past. That's the place where we have real communication, and that's important for me and for Charles as well," he added.
When asked about his championship hopes, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli now 79 points clear, Hamilton remained realistic. "Nothing is, but it's gonna happen at some point, so it's fine. The fact is, Charles and I are doing this there, and he's done a fantastic job, and we're just both trying to do our best each weekend," he concluded.
With the season still long, Ferrari needs to quickly address communication and strategy execution if they want to challenge their rivals. Meanwhile, Hamilton and Leclerc's focus is on continuous improvement to optimize the performance of the SF-26.
