George Russell Urges FIA to Make F1 Cooling Vests Mandatory

Driver comfort in hot climates has taken center stage once again as George Russell calls on Formula 1's governing body to step in. The debate highlights the ongoing struggle between optimizing car performance and ensuring driver safety during extreme temperature race weekends.

The discussion surrounding thermal exhaustion traces back to the demanding 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. In response, the FIA introduced water-circulation cooling vests deployed whenever a "heat hazard" is declared for ambient temperatures exceeding 31C.

However, implementing these bespoke solutions remains optional. Mercedes opted against developing a robust version to avoid diverting crucial resources and funds away from core car performance development.

"We won’t be running the cooling vest because we haven’t put the resource into making it robust enough," Russell explained, as reported by Autosport. This trade-off prompted his appeal for regulatory intervention.

Russell believes the FIA should level the playing field by either providing a cost-cap exemption for the technology or appointing an external developer to supply a standardized vest for the entire grid.
