George Russell is desperately searching for answers after admitting to not being quick enough during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin. The Mercedes driver could only manage an eighth-place finish while his teammate dominated proceedings from pole position.
The struggles began early on the opening lap when the Briton was defending against Oscar Piastri heading into Turn 12. He ran off the track and rejoined ahead of the McLaren driver, subsequently receiving a five-second time penalty for gaining an off-track advantage.
Although the penalty had minimal overall impact on his final position, the lack of race pace remained a glaring issue throughout the afternoon. When questioned about his specific struggles by television broadcasters, Russell pointed directly to a fundamental lack of speed.

"Just not being quick enough, to be honest," Russell stated regarding his difficult weekend. "I need to try and understand why it is. It's strange when you're so far off, so hopefully there's some answers somewhere. But, anyway, I don't have one."
The disappointing result arrived despite a recently introduced upgrade package on the W17 charger, which has proven difficult to balance with a narrow operating window. This up-and-down form has plagued the driver since the modifications debuted earlier in the flyaway leg.
"The pace wasn't good on the first stint," Russell explained to the written media in Austin. "But when I came out of the pits on the hard tyres, I probably did six laps where I was lapping the same pace as Kimi. But then I caught up with Oscar and I just couldn't overtake. Six good laps, 50 bad laps."
With only a handful of rounds remaining in the 2026 season, the championship battle continues to evolve, yet the squad remains firmly on course to secure the prestigious constructors' crown.
