Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell extended his lead in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship after securing victory in the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Mercedes driver now holds an 11-point advantage at the top of the standings following the one-third distance race.
Russell controlled the sprint from the front after converting his sprint pole position into victory at the Shanghai International Circuit. The result moves the British driver to 33 points in the championship, strengthening his early-season position ahead of the full-length grand prix where a further 25 points remain available.
Team-mate Kimi Antonelli endured a more complicated race after starting alongside Russell on the front row. The Italian driver dropped positions at the start and later received a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision involving Isack Hadjar.

Antonelli eventually recovered to finish fourth after serving his penalty during the safety car phase triggered by the incident. Despite the recovery, the result allowed Russell to increase his advantage in the drivers’ standings.
Charles Leclerc secured second place for Ferrari, moving him level on 22 championship points with Antonelli. Meanwhile, Leclerc’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished third to add six points to his tally.
The sprint result provides an early indication of the evolving championship battle in the 2026 Formula 1 season. With the main Chinese Grand Prix still to come in Shanghai, and 25 points available for the race winner, the standings remain open as teams prepare for the remainder of the weekend.
