Mercedes driver George Russell missed another crucial opportunity to close the gap in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship after committing a costly unforced error at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The Briton had executed a textbook start to seize the lead, immediately overtaking Max Verstappen whose Red Bull once again suffered from poor launch performance off the line from pole position.
Prior to the dramatic crash, the eight-time Grand Prix winner was on course to collect valuable points while championship leader Kimi Antonelli was struggling down in seventh place. However, the promising race scenario evaporated instantly when the rear tires of the Mercedes slipped on the white line and aggressive curbing near the entry of the main straight.
The unexpected torque delivery from the power unit's battery caught the driver off guard, inducing sudden front-end push and an unrecoverable rear snap. The car slid violently across the track, smashing heavily into the left-hand barriers before rebounding across the asphalt.

"Oh, nein ā sorry, sorry, sorry," groaned Russell over the team radio immediately following the impact. Reflecting on the incident, the 28-year-old stated that it was a severe misjudgment on his part. He explained that the unexpected power surge from the battery pushed the car wide over the front axle, forcing him onto the white line where a spin became entirely unavoidable.
Mercedes mechanics faced a frantic race against time to repair the heavily damaged chassis and potential gearbox issues caused by the severe lateral impact. Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord added that the high-torque characteristics of the power unit on tricky surfaces made the car exceptionally difficult to control once the rear stepped out of line.
Capitalizing on the chaosāwhich included a clash between the two McLaren driversāKimi Antonelli inherited fourth place to extend his commanding world championship lead to 89 points over his teammate as the 2026 season enters its final stretch.
