George Russell secured Sprint pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix after defeating team-mate Kimi Antonelli in Sprint Qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Russell delivered a session-best lap of 1:12.965 to lead a Mercedes front-row lockout, underlining the Brackley-based team's impressive pace throughout Friday's running in Montreal.
Antonelli arrived in Canada carrying the momentum of the championship lead and appeared among the favourites heading into Sprint Qualifying. However, when it mattered most in SQ3, Russell extracted more performance from the W17 package and edged the Italian by just 0.068 seconds. The result handed Mercedes its strongest qualifying performance of the weekend and positioned both drivers ideally for the Sprint.
The scale of Mercedes' advantage was particularly notable. Lando Norris placed his McLaren third with a lap of 1:13.280, ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri in fourth. The gap of more than three tenths to pole suggested Mercedes had found a highly effective balance between straight-line efficiency and braking stability, two critical performance areas at the stop-and-go Montreal circuit.

Behind McLaren, the Ferrari pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc completed the top six. While Ferrari remained competitive, the Scuderia was unable to challenge Mercedes for outright pace over a single lap. Meanwhile, reigning world champion Max Verstappen could manage only seventh after failing to improve sufficiently during the final phase of qualifying.
Further down the order, Racing Bulls enjoyed an encouraging session as Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad secured eighth and ninth positions respectively. Their performance provided a welcome boost following Liam Lawson's earlier withdrawal due to technical problems. Williams also salvaged a place inside the top ten through Carlos Sainz after Alex Albon was ruled out following extensive damage sustained during practice.
The session was also interrupted by a crash involving Fernando Alonso. The Aston Martin driver locked up entering Turn 3 and struck the barriers while attempting to progress to the next phase. The resulting red flag marked the fourth stoppage of the day in Montreal after incidents involving Lawson, Albon and Haas driver Esteban Ocon earlier in the weekend.
The result gives Mercedes a major opportunity to strengthen its position in both championships. With Antonelli leading the drivers' standings and Russell starting from Sprint pole, the team enters Saturday's Sprint race as the clear favourite. However, McLaren and Ferrari remain within striking distance, while the strategic demands of the Sprint format and tyre management at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve could still influence the outcome of the weekend.
