Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Formula 1 is understood to be reviewing contingency measures should it be forced to cancel the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The mid-April rounds have come under scrutiny following regional attacks affecting Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as well as neighbouring United Arab Emirates cities including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. At present, however, the situation is reportedly being handled calmly, with no immediate decision required for approximately two weeks, allowing time for further assessment.
From a logistical standpoint, non-critical freight not required for the opening trio of races in Australia, China and Japan has remained in Bahrain since the conclusion of February’s pre-season tests. Formula 1’s established freight “leapfrogging” system provides additional flexibility: equipment currently in Australia will be shipped to Japan, while freight designated for China will subsequently move toward Bahrain. This staggered approach enables the championship to avoid a premature operational response while monitoring developments.
The Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled for April 10–12, followed by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on April 17–19. F1 management continues to observe the situation closely and is expected to make a final determination if required in the coming weeks.
To prevent a vacant month between the Japanese Grand Prix (March 27–29) and the Miami Grand Prix (May 1–3), alternative venues could theoretically be considered should cancellation become unavoidable.
One logical option would be the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, which hosted four of the last five seasons before being dropped from the 2026 calendar in favour of Madrid’s return as the Spanish Grand Prix venue.
Another potential candidate is the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, which stepped in during the Covid-affected 2020 and 2021 campaigns and is already confirmed to return to the calendar in 2027 and 2028.
No replacement venues have been officially mentioned at this stage. However, Formula 1’s logistical structure and calendar flexibility provide viable pathways to maintain competitive continuity should the security situation in the Gulf region prevent the scheduled events from taking place.
A final decision will ultimately depend on security evaluations in the coming fortnight, with safety considerations remaining the overriding priority before confirming the early-season trajectory of the 2026 championship.
