FIA Software Bug Triggers F1 Grid Chaos During Sepang Safety Car

The opening wet-weather race of the 2026 Formula 1 season descended into surreal chaos when a technical glitch brought the grid to a grinding halt. Max Verstappen was the first to suffer a sudden power loss while crawling slowly behind the safety car, quickly followed by Lewis Hamilton and several other machines coming to unexpected standstills.

Race control had no choice but to throw the red flag, forcing a tense 40-minute delay before competitive action could finally get underway. FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis later confirmed to media including Motorsport.com that a software bug supplied by the governing body and co-developed with teams was entirely responsible for the grid drama.

Tombazis admitted that the software could not be tested extensively due to a severe lack of wet-running mileage throughout the year. The issue specifically manifested when cars dropped to extremely low speeds behind the safety car, triggering an unforeseen loop within the wet-weather 250kW power restriction protocols.

This concertina effect at very low speeds caused the power units to cut deployment, leaving drivers feeling as though their throttle pedals had been completely disconnected from the engine. Several competitors expressed genuine shock over the bizarre sensation of losing total throttle control out on the circuit.

Fortunately, a rapid software patch was rushed through the system during the red flag stoppage, allowing the race to safely resume once the FIA successfully neutralized the glitch and restored full operational reliability to the power units.
