FIA Software Bug Causes Chaos and Delay at F1 Malaysian GP

The start of the wet-weather Formula 1 season opener descended into unexpected chaos when Max Verstappen and several rivals suddenly lost power behind the safety car. The bizarre incident forced race control to throw a red flag and delay proceedings for 40 minutes at Sepang.

FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis later confirmed to media outlets including Autosport that a software bug developed collaboratively with teams was to blame. A lack of extensive wet-weather testing prior to the weekend meant the glitch slipped past final checks unnoticed.

The issue was closely tied to the 250kW electrical power reduction in wet conditions combined with ultra-low speeds on formation laps, trapping cars in an electronic loop. Drivers admitted feeling genuine shock when their throttle pedals completely stopped responding to input.

Fortunately, a rapid emergency software patch was rushed through the paddock to resolve the glitch. Once the fix was successfully implemented, the race resumed safely and allowed the action to finally get underway.
