The dramatic incidents at the start of the Sepang race caused by software glitches in power units have prompted swift action from governing body FIA. According to reports from FormulaPassion, the chaotic scenes on a wet track forced Race Control to suspend the start procedure, drawing sharp criticism from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who did not mince words in labeling the situation shameful.
Following a thorough investigation into those chaotic minutes, the Federation has officially released a detailed statement outlining the root causes and preventative measures. The analysis specifically focused on why several cars suffered unexpected power losses during the formation lap behind the Safety Car under wet conditions.
The investigation concluded that certain cars running at low engine speeds in sectors where a 250 kW power reduction was applied suffered a power loss significantly higher than initially anticipated, which could not be recovered in those specific sectors of the circuit.
As an immediate countermeasure, the software configuration utilized in Sepang will be reinstated should similar weather conditions occur at upcoming rounds. Furthermore, a comprehensive wet-weather software update is officially scheduled for deployment at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 25.
Additionally, the technical review recommended enhanced software testing protocols, acknowledging limited testing opportunities. The FIA, alongside teams and power unit manufacturers, will continue to strengthen validation processes through independent evaluations and feedback, incorporating input from the standard Electronic Control Unit supplier.
