Ferrari is reportedly preparing a special tribute to Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The Maranello-based team is set to run its SF-26 cars with a dedicated livery honouring the German, who claimed five of his seven world titles with the Scuderia.
According to AutoRacer, the design will combine red and black accents with gold wheels, drawing inspiration from the 1996 F310. This is a highly symbolic moment, as the Italian GP marks the 30-year anniversary of Schumacher's first victory with Ferrari in 1996, as well as the 20th anniversary of his last F1 win in 2006.
Ferrari is planning several events to pay tribute to Schumacher in the build-up to the Monza race and during the weekend itself. The team has hinted at this through a series of posts on social media, sparking excitement among the tifosi.
Schumacher is synonymous with Ferrari's dominance, having won five consecutive world titles from 2000 to 2004 and amassing 72 of his 91 race wins with the Italian outfit. At Monza, he won the Italian Grand Prix five times with Ferrari, making him one of the most successful drivers at the circuit.
His record of seven F1 titles is now shared with Lewis Hamilton, who currently drives for Ferrari. Hamilton, who secured his first Ferrari win at Barcelona in June, sits third in the drivers' championship, 59 points behind Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc's hopes of winning Ferrari's home race are boosted by the anticipated introduction of an upgraded power unit, which could give the team a significant performance lift in front of their home crowd.
This moment also brings back memories of one of F1's most emotional scenes: a tearful Schumacher announcing his first retirement immediately after winning the 2006 Italian Grand Prix. He returned to F1 with Mercedes in 2010 before retiring for good two years later. Now 57, Schumacher has been recovering from severe head injuries sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013.
