Ferrari Set to Surprise McLaren in Miami 2026

Both teams are set to bring significant updates to the Miami International Autodrome, although early attention has largely focused on McLaren’s aggressive development plan. The Woking-based outfit has confirmed that across Miami and Canada, it will effectively roll out a near-complete evolution of the MCL40, underlining its intent to accelerate performance gains.

Ferrari, however, has established a strong reputation for technical innovation during the early phase of the season. A notable example is the inverted rear wing concept introduced during testing, a solution that has since drawn interest from rival teams, including Red Bull Racing. This highlights Ferrari’s ability to lead in aerodynamic creativity.

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer described the situation heading into Miami as an “upgrade-off” between Ferrari and McLaren, where the effectiveness of each team’s development package will be critical. He suggested that Ferrari should at least maintain a position among the top three in terms of outright pace.

“The question is how strong McLaren’s upgrade package is compared to Ferrari’s, because they are essentially going head-to-head in a development race going into Miami,” Palmer explained.

This view was reinforced by former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, who suggested Ferrari could deliver the biggest surprise. He pointed to the team’s consistent trend of innovation since pre-season as a key indicator of its potential to introduce impactful upgrades.

“Ferrari has been the team bringing some of the most interesting innovations so far. There is a chance we are underestimating their ability to arrive with the most significant and impressive upgrades in Miami,” Hinchcliffe added.

From a competitive perspective, the outcome of this development battle will directly influence drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who rely on technical improvements to close the gap to their main rivals.
