Friday at Monza always holds deeper stories than just lap times. Behind the scenes, there's an energy management chess game that often goes unnoticed. For Ferrari, it was a day to prove they not only brought a more powerful engine but also a more refined energy deployment tactic.
From data analysis, Ferrari showed impressive performance in the two slowest chicanes: the Prima Variante and Roggia. Their SF26 car navigated corners effectively, especially in direction changes and exit traction. However, there was a slight drama when Charles Leclerc spun while attacking the kerb at Roggia, a minor incident that didn't shake the team's confidence.
Interestingly, the energy approaches between Ferrari and Mercedes were starkly contrasting. Mercedes opted to aggressively use their electrical energy in the first three straights, leaving them depleted by the time they reached the Ascari-Parabolica section. Ferrari did the opposite: they held back initially, then unleashed all their electrical might at the end of the track, precisely in the zone where rivals typically struggle. This strategy yielded significant time differences, especially on the long straight leading to Parabolica.
Adopting this philosophy isn't without risk. Leclerc himself appeared more comfortable than his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, who is still searching for the right balance in the first corner. Despite that, Leclerc's lap time was nearly identical to George Russell's, only losing a few tenths due to an imperfect exit from Parabolica. This indicates the fight at the front will be extremely tight.
With a smart energy strategy and a new, more powerful engine, Ferrari now has the weaponry to genuinely challenge Mercedes on home soil. Can they maintain this performance through to Sunday? All eyes will be on the two red cars on the grid.
