The fallout from the opening-lap clash between Lewis Hamilton and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc at the Mexico City Grand Prix continues to simmer. Team principal Fred Vasseur publicly criticized the incident, describing it as a "lack of respect" for the Scuderia and the thousands of employees working behind the scenes.
Addressing these remarks ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion insisted that he has always held the team in the highest regard. "Well, we haven't really had the time to speak much in depth," Hamilton said. "We have spoken, and I fully understand my responsibility to the team. We have so many people working so hard back at the factory; that's why I'm always praising them."
Hamilton emphasized that he consistently tries to show his appreciation and does his absolute utmost to push the team forward. He believes his contribution to the team's current standing is a significant positive, despite the friction experienced on the track. Vasseur had previously admitted he was struggling to swallow the result, as the team threw away a golden opportunity for a potential victory or a 1-2 finish in Mexico.
When asked if he accepted Vasseur's displeasure and inflammatory comments, Hamilton replied simply, "I think my respect has always been the highest for my team." In-depth discussions between the two drivers have yet to take place, partly because Leclerc returned to Europe following the birth of his daughter.
This situation adds significant pressure to the Maranello-based squad as they continue their pursuit in the constructors' standings. The internal tension remains a major talking point in the paddock, with the team aiming to regain focus for the final stages of the season.
