Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin enter the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix with a clear objective: complete a full race distance at the Shanghai International Circuit. After early-season vibration issues linked to the new Honda power unit battery, the team believes a small but meaningful step forward has been achieved.

The partnership between Aston Martin and Honda endured a difficult start during the opening round in Australia. Vibrations originating from the battery component of the power unit created significant disturbances throughout the AMR26 chassis, affecting both performance and driver comfort. In Melbourne, Alonso retired after 21 laps, while teammate Lance Stroll managed 43 laps before also retiring from the race.

The severity of the vibration issue raised concerns within the team. Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey previously warned that the problem could potentially cause physical strain to drivers if it continued unresolved. As a result, Aston Martin and Honda worked intensively between rounds to introduce technical countermeasures aimed at stabilising the power unit system.

At the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, Honda began to see early signs of improvement. Although both Aston Martin drivers were eliminated in the first segment of sprint qualifying and the main qualifying session, they successfully completed the sprint race on Saturday, allowing the team to gather valuable reliability data from the updated battery configuration.

“We introduced countermeasures to address the vibration of the battery after the last event in Australia,” said Shintaro Orihara, Honda trackside general manager and chief engineer.

“We have increased the mileage of the battery through FP1, sprint qualifying and the sprint race. It is a very small step, but an important step for both Honda and Aston Martin as we confirmed the system could complete a full sprint distance.”

Alonso echoed that the team's priority for Sunday’s Grand Prix is reliability rather than outright performance. The two-time world champion will start the race from 19th on the grid, with Stroll lining up in 21st following a difficult qualifying session.

“The aim tomorrow is to run a normal race and see the chequered flag with both cars,” Alonso said.

“Not like Melbourne. We want to complete the race normally.”

Successfully finishing the full race distance in Shanghai would represent a critical reliability milestone for Aston Martin’s AMR26 package and Honda’s power unit integration. The data collected during the race will play a key role as Formula 1 prepares to move to the next round of the 2026 championship.
