Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has launched a scathing critique regarding the standard of competition on the grid following a costly first-lap collision at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The two-time world champion was left deeply frustrated after contact with the Williams car driven by Alex Albon at Turn 11 in Austin, ruining what he believed was the team's most competitive performance of the season.

Starting from 12th on the grid, Alonso found himself squeezed between Albon's aggressive inside move and Esteban Ocon on the outside as the pack jostled for position. The resulting contact inflicted severe damage to the floor of Alonso's car, severely compromising his race pace and ruining any chances of securing a points finish.

"Albon forgot that corner 11 was there and he had to turn left," Alonso bluntly stated when reviewing the race incident. "I think the quality of the drivers in the lower third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex," he added.

The veteran Spaniard revealed the extent of the wreckage after inspecting his machine in parc ferme. "The car is destroyed. I saw it in parc ferme. Half of the floor is not there. I don't know how we kept on going and how we were semi-competitive," he explained, noting that the damage cost him at least half a second per lap.

Reflecting on the midfield struggles, Alonso acknowledged that Aston Martin must elevate its overall competitiveness to steer clear of chaotic battles further down the order. "I think we need to improve the car and start a little bit higher up," he concluded, emphasizing the urgent need for car development.
