Fernando Alonso admitted he had no control over his car after crashing during Sprint Qualifying for the 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver lost control following a major front-wheel lock-up while approaching Turn 3 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
The incident occurred during Alonso's final attempt in the opening phase of Sprint Qualifying. As he pushed to extract the maximum performance from a car that continues to struggle for competitiveness in the midfield, the Spaniard braked too late and locked the front tyres. The car then slid straight into the barriers, triggering a red flag with less than two minutes remaining in the session.
Despite the accident, Alonso unexpectedly benefited from the interruption. When the session resumed, most drivers were unable to complete an improved lap due to the limited time available. As a result, Alonso remained 14th on the timesheets and guided Aston Martin into the second phase of Sprint Qualifying for the first time this season.

However, the damage sustained by the AMR26 prevented Alonso from taking any further part in the session. He was ultimately classified 16th on the grid for the Sprint, although the result still represented a modest step forward compared to several previous weekends.
Speaking after the session, Alonso explained that the accident was caused by a complete front-wheel lock-up under braking.
"I locked up the front and you are a passenger after that. There is no room to avoid anything here in Canada. Too much on the limit."
The two-time world champion also acknowledged that Aston Martin currently lacks the pace required to compete naturally in higher positions. According to Alonso, the team is being forced to push beyond the car's realistic performance level in order to fight further up the order.
"We are a little bit behind and we don't have the pace. We are P14, I guess, so we were pushing seven or eight places ahead of what we should have."
His comments highlight the challenges Aston Martin continues to face throughout the 2026 season. The Silverstone-based outfit is still searching for solutions to improve car balance and overall performance after enduring a difficult start to the campaign.
On the other side of the garage, Lance Stroll also endured a disappointing session in front of his home crowd. The Canadian could manage only 18th place after failing to improve his lap time following the red-flag interruption caused by Alonso's accident.
Stroll explained that tyre temperatures had dropped significantly while waiting in the pit lane, leaving him unable to extract maximum performance during his final attempt. As a result, Aston Martin progressed only one car beyond the opening phase of Sprint Qualifying.
Although the final result was far from ideal, Alonso's progression into SQ2 represented one of the few positive signs for Aston Martin. The team currently sits at the bottom of the constructors' championship and has struggled to challenge consistently for points, making every small step forward increasingly important.
With the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying sessions still to come, Aston Martin hopes to build on the data collected in Montreal and continue the progress shown since the Miami Grand Prix. However, based on Alonso's own assessment, improving outright pace remains the team's primary challenge if it is to return to regular midfield contention during the remainder of the season.
