Formula 2 pulled the wraps off its next-generation machine in the Monza paddock on Saturday, revealing a car that closely mirrors the design language of Formula 1's 2026 regulations. The new challenger is set to race from 2027 through 2029.
The boldest move? F2 is keeping the existing chassis, opting for an evolution rather than a revolution. This strategic decision is aimed squarely at keeping costs in check for teams.
Why This New Look Matters
This design shift continues F2's mission to act as the ultimate proving ground for F1. After adopting ground-effect styling in 2024, the series now aligns its visual identity with the next era of grand prix racing.
More importantly, the revised aero package is engineered to let cars follow each other more closely. That translates to tighter battles, more overtaking opportunities, and edge-of-the-seat racing for fans.
Under the skin, the Mecachrome-built 3.4-litre turbo V6 carries over unchanged. The 18-inch wheel rims also remain, a size F2 pioneered back in 2020 – two years before F1 made the switch.
Tech Upgrades and a Bright Future
For the first time, the F2 car features an onboard starter system. This innovation is set to dramatically reduce the risk of cars stalling and getting stranded, a common cause of red flags in the past.
F2 credits the development of an evolution of the current Hewland gearbox for this breakthrough. The car will also run on sustainable fuel supplied by Aramco, a partner of Aston Martin's F1 squad.
Strong speculation suggests this machine will be the weapon of choice for Lando Norris's brand-new LN4 Fusion team next season. Led by former Prema chief Rene Rosin, the squad is yet to receive official entry confirmation, but it's widely seen as a mere formality.
