F1 Drivers Demand Madring Changes After Boring Spanish GP

The Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit left drivers frustrated and fans underwhelmed. Despite providing an exciting qualifying session, the race itself was a procession with virtually no overtaking. The mood in the paddock was summed up by Gabriel Bortoleto, who admitted he almost fell asleep during the race.

Qualifying Thrill, Race Snooze

Drivers had predicted that the Madring would be a challenge for racing. Max Verstappen said he couldn't see a single overtaking opportunity. His prediction came true. The race was devoid of on-track action, leading many in the media centre to nearly doze off. Even race winner Kimi Antonelli shared that view, stating that the track doesn't create overtaking opportunities and doesn't push drivers to attempt moves due to the high risk of contact.

Circuit Design Under Fire

Drivers pointed out that they were not involved in the design process. Verstappen noted that in Jeddah, drivers were consulted after the track proved dangerous in its first year, but that didn't happen with Madring. Oliver Bearman from Haas, who crashed heavily in FP3, criticised the layout, saying it was clear from the start that it would be poor for racing. He highlighted two factors: long combined exits that make it hard to put power down, and combined entries that make defending easy and overtaking difficult.

Calls for Change

Drivers hope for better communication with circuit designers in the future. They want new tracks like Madring to be evaluated and modified to create more overtaking opportunities. Without changes, the Spanish GP could become a boring spectacle. The FIA and organisers are expected to respond to these concerns to improve the quality of racing.
