Frustration filled the paddock after the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring in Madrid. Drivers complained about the lack of overtaking, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto admitting he almost fell asleep during the race. "I almost fell asleep as well!" he told Motorsport.com, highlighting the monotony of the event.
Antonelli's Hollow Victory
Kimi Antonelli won the race but acknowledged that the track is not enjoyable for racing. "It definitely doesn’t create overtaking opportunities and it doesn’t push you to try and make a move, because 80% of the time you might have contact," said the Mercedes driver. "Especially in the second chicane, if I would have turned in there, me and Lando would have touched and probably gone into the wall. There are some corners that need to be changed."
Antonelli added that the track is only good for one flying lap, but in the race you’re just stuck behind. This was echoed by Max Verstappen, who had predicted the lack of action. "Just give me the track map," he said, indicating he would make numerous changes.
Harsh Criticism from Drivers
Haas' Oliver Bearman, who crashed heavily in FP3 and missed qualifying, stated that the layout was clearly going to be poor for racing. "You only have to look at the layout, and it's quite clear that it's going to be a poor track for racing," Bearman said. "When you arrive and you see that layout, you're like, what do you expect us to do? It's a bit of a shame."
According to Bearman, two factors make attacking very difficult and defending too easy: many long combined exits where it's tough to put power down, and combined entries that make dangerous defending easy. "We already said that to the FIA on Friday and we need changes," he stressed.
Circuit Design Without Driver Input
Drivers also highlighted the design process that did not involve them. Verstappen explained that this only happened in Jeddah after the track proved dangerous in its first year, but not with new circuits like the Madring. For the future, drivers would like to see that change.
With a boring race, pressure is now on organizers and the FIA to evaluate quickly. Otherwise, the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid risks losing its appeal to fans and drivers alike.
