Big news from the world of Formula 1. On Wednesday, F1 and the FIA officially unveiled the 2027 season calendar featuring 24 grands prix across 22 countries, and the standout is the debut of the Australian Grand Prix as a sprint host. This marks the first time Albert Park will feature the sprint format, coinciding with a massive expansion to five sprint events early in the season.

The decision was approved by the World Motor Sport Council. Australia, which opened the season in 2025 and 2026, moves to the third round in early April. That position could still shift if uncertainty in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia forces changes. However, Australia will be one of five first-time sprint hosts alongside Bahrain, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi.

Montreal and Silverstone retain their sprint weekends from this season, while Monza, Sao Paulo, and Qatar return to the format. Conversely, China, Miami, and Singapore lose their sprint status, and Zandvoort drops off the calendar entirely. The total number of sprint races in 2027 jumps to 10, up four from the previous season, meaning nearly 42 percent of race weekends will feature sprint action.

The expansion is backed by positive data. F1 claims sprint race viewership is 12 percent higher than conventional events. CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed the growth. "We are thrilled to welcome Portugal and Turkiye back to the calendar," he said. He also emphasized that sprints have become a key part of F1's modern appeal.

With 24 races, the 2027 season will be one of the busiest in history. Australia will be an early test, as drivers must adapt to the sprint format at the Albert Park street circuit. It also presents teams with an opportunity to score extra points early on.

For fans, this calendar promises more action and tension. Sprint races often deliver more aggressive racing due to the shorter distance. Australia, with its vibrant atmosphere, is expected to be one of the most exciting sprints of the season.
