F1 2027: 24 Races, Sprint Debut in Monaco and Portugal Return

F1 has officially unveiled its 2027 calendar with 24 races, and the biggest surprise: Monaco will host a sprint race for the first time ever. The decision raises eyebrows given the narrow street circuit's notorious difficulty for overtaking.

The 2027 season kicks off in Bahrain on 14 March, followed by Saudi Arabia as a double-header. Australia, Japan, and China follow before F1 heads to Miami and Montreal in May. Canada remains three weeks apart from Miami, and its 23 May date avoids a clash with the Indy 500.

Europe welcomes the circus on 6 June in Monaco. The sprint in Monaco will capitalize on qualifying as the main spectacle, with two separate qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday. Portugal returns after being absent since 2021, using the Algarve circuit in Portimao on 20 June. Silverstone, Austria, Belgium, and Hungary complete the first half, which ends on 1 August.

After the summer break, action resumes in Italy (5 September) and Madrid. Turkey also returns on 3 October as part of a triple-header with Baku and Singapore. Another triple-header in the Americas includes Austin, Mexico, and Brazil, while Las Vegas becomes a standalone race on 20 November. The season closes with a double-header in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, both featuring the sprint format.

The number of sprints increases from six to ten. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi will make their sprint debuts, while Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar return to the sprint format. F1 cites commercial success as the driving force: data shows sprint viewership is 12% higher, sprint qualifying is three times more popular than free practice, and 82% of attendees feel sprints add value to their tickets.

With 10 sprints, F1 management aims to deliver more competitive action for fans, promoters, and partners. However, the decision to hold a sprint in Monaco raises a big question: will the format diminish the uniqueness of the legendary circuit? Only time will tell.
