The 2026 Formula 1 season delivered another thrilling qualifying showdown as Kimi Antonelli clinched his seventh pole position of the year. The Mercedes rising star outpaced the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar at the United States Grand Prix, marking his first pole triumph since July.
However, the provisional starting grid for Sunday's race has undergone a significant shake-up due to a series of grid penalties handed down across the field. These technical infringements have drastically altered the strategic landscape for the opening laps at the Circuit of the Americas.
Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad put in a stellar performance to reach Q3 and initially qualified in ninth place. The team opted to bench his teammate in the final shootout, but Lindblad himself could not escape sanction, picking up a five-place grid drop for taking his sixth internal combustion engine of the campaign, dropping him down to 14th on the grid.

Further down the order, Alpine's Franco Colapinto saw his 14th-place qualification ruined by a 10-place grid penalty for utilizing his fourth control electronics unit of the season, forcing him to start all the way back in 21st position. Meanwhile, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto faces a staggering 80-place cumulative grid penalty following widespread power unit component changes throughout the weekend.
With the provisional grid now finalized amidst these setbacks, the grand prix promises intense recovery drives from the back markers and fierce tactical battles at the front. The lights-out moment will test both reliability and raw race pace under immense pressure.
