A revised format for the event this year had qualifying for the opening race moved forward to Friday, meaning today’s Shootout is the very first Supercars session of the day. This schedule shift forces drivers straight into high-stakes action without extensive preparation, instantly ratcheting up the tension inside the paddock. Meanwhile, looming weather forecasts predicting more rain over the Gold Coast inject an extra layer of unpredictability into an already punishing street circuit.

Rising star Brodie Feeney openly admitted that the unique single-lap shootout format demands immense mental fortitude. Navigating the unforgiving concrete walls on cold tires during the opening minutes of the day requires total commitment under extreme pressure.

"It’s going to take a lot of balls to show up and throw it into Turn 1 on the first lap," he said, highlighting the daunting task awaiting the grid. "A lot of guys are hitting it on the second lap, so the first lap of the day to be the Shootout is going to be pretty exciting as a fan, I think, and as a driver as well. It’s going to be hard work out there."

Feeney bounced back brilliantly from a lackluster outing at Bathurst, ending Friday's qualifying in second place on the timesheets. He finished a mere 0.069s adrift of pacesetter Anton De Pasquale, showcasing a remarkable turnaround in form.

Crucially, this strong Friday result bucked a frustrating trend of early-weekend struggles that has plagued the Triple Eight squad since their high-profile switch to Ford machinery this season. According to Speedcafe reports, precise engineering adjustments overnight allowed the crew to finally unlock optimal car balance.

"I didn’t know what to expect," Feeney said of the qualifying session, which was preceded by a wet opening practice and a dry second session. "We’ve had a lot of Fridays this year where we’ve rolled out and we really struggled to get on top of the car and we’re kind of outside the 10 on a Friday in practice. So when you see a qualifying session on the Friday, you know you need to roll out strong and thankfully the guys at Triple Eight did a great job at that. Rolling into a Shootout tomorrow is going to be pretty full on, but looking forward to that."
