The tension at the top of the WRC standings is heating up. Elfyn Evans faces a big dilemma on the final day of Rally Japan: chase the win or secure crucial championship points? With five stages remaining, the Toyota driver leads closest rival Adrien Fourmaux by just 3.3 seconds after the Frenchman's aggressive Saturday charge.
Evans' performance on day two was solid. He started the morning with the fastest time on the first stage, but then opted to play it safe after spotting large rocks on the road. "On the second stage there were already some huge rocks around so I played it safe, and it was a similar story in the mud later in the loop," he said. The decision to use hard tyres in the afternoon also raised questions, though he cited concerns about wear after Friday's issues.
What surprised Evans most was Fourmaux's attack on the spectator stage that closed Saturday's action, where the Hyundai driver clawed back more than nine seconds in just over three kilometres. "He has been charging hard and had a strong day, and it was a surprise to lose so much time in the super special," Evans said. "But we can expect more difficult conditions tomorrow and just need to keep doing the best we can."

Evans' third place overall is now under threat. He must balance speed to fight for the podium with caution to secure vital points. "Every point matters at the end of the season, so we just have to try to score as many as possible. Perhaps I drove a little too conservative side," he admitted.
The battle for Super Sunday and the Power Stage will be decisive. Evans knows that a small mistake could be costly, both for this rally and his championship hopes. Toyota is counting on him to bring home maximum points.
With conditions expected to get even tougher, Evans must be smart. Will he take risks or play it safe? All will be answered over the final five stages, which promise drama to the finish line.
