Esteban Ocon has revealed that Lewis Hamilton approached him for a private conversation during the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin. The supportive gesture came in the wake of confirmation that the French driver will lose his full-time Formula 1 race seat ahead of the 2027 season, with Haas opting to sign a Ferrari junior for the future.
Haas officially announced last month that Ocon would depart the squad at the conclusion of the current campaign, paving the way for the Formula 2 championship leader to take over the seat. Despite facing an uncertain career trajectory, Ocon remains fiercely determined to prolong his stint in the pinnacle of motorsport, admitting he is actively exploring reserve driver opportunities if a primary race seat falls through.
A video clip quickly circulated across social media platforms following last weekend's action in Austin, capturing Hamilton walking up to Ocon to inquire about his ongoing situation and future prospects. While the exact dialogue was initially difficult to decipher from the footage, Ocon confirmed to reporters that the seven-time world champion offered words of empathy regarding his sudden departure from the team.
Speaking ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, Ocon praised the commendable sportsmanship displayed by his competitor. "Yeah, Lewis came to me in Austin. We chatted a little bit about the situation and how things went," Ocon explained to media representatives in Mexico. When pressed on whether the gesture provided a welcome boost, the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix victor confirmed that it certainly did.
Ocon further disclosed that Hamilton and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll stand as the sole two drivers from the current grid who reached out to offer personal support following the confirmation of his Haas exit. Meanwhile, Hamilton also shared his candid thoughts regarding the impending departure of the veteran racer during media day proceedings in Mexico.
"I think he's one of the nicest guys here," Hamilton stated regarding his peer. "I could guess that it's probably not been easy over the years but I think he remains positive. It's sad to see him leave because I think he's a very, very talented driver." Looking ahead, Ocon has firmly ruled out transitioning to any alternative racing categories should he fail to retain a competitive spot on the Formula 1 grid for 2027.
