Esteban Ocon has finally broken his silence regarding Haas' decision to sign Ferrari junior Rafael Camara for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The French driver acknowledges that the Brazilian rookie deserves his upcoming opportunity in the pinnacle of motorsport, but firmly maintains that he does not deserve to find himself without a race seat for the 2027 championship.
Camara's confirmation arrived last week as the current Formula 2 championship leader prepares to step up to the grid. While Haas is yet to officially finalize a contract extension for Oliver Bearman, the American outfit's moves have left Ocon with virtually no realistic racing opportunities for 2027 barring unexpected driver market shifts.
With his options heavily restricted, the 30-year-old veteran admitted that his most likely fallback plan to stay connected to the sport will be securing a reserve driver role rather than making a switch to an alternative motorsport category. Ocon was adamant that his on-track performances were never the underlying reason for his departure from the team.
"I can't say very much. What I will say is that Rafa deserves a shot in F1. I think he's shown in the categories that he's very good," Ocon stated ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend. "Pero I don't deserve to be out of F1 at the same time. That's it. I'm coming here to do the best job I can, trying to exploit the maximum out of the car."
Highlighting his extensive competitive CV across junior formulae, Ocon expressed absolute confidence in his sporting merits. "As I said, I deserve to be here in Formula 1. There are many circumstances why I'm not here next year. But they are not the performance reasons. I've won everything in every category—in go-karts, in Formula Renault, in Formula 3, in GP3, in F1. I believe that this is not my last year in F1," he added.
