The qualifying session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned into a disaster for Fernando Alonso after a power unit failure cut short his run in Q1 of the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix.
The two-time world champion was forced to park his AMR26 in the stadium section with eleven minutes remaining in the opening segment. Despite briefly holding the fastest time among eleven drivers on his initial flying lap, the lack of further running dropped him down to 18th place on the timesheets, leaving him 0.387s shy of advancing to Q2. Meanwhile, his teammate Lance Stroll struggled similarly, qualifying down in 20th position.
Reflecting on the unexpected mechanical breakdown, the experienced Spaniard admitted that the setback compounded an already difficult afternoon marked by severe temperature management challenges at the high-altitude Mexican venue.

"Huge problems with temperatures for everybody," Alonso stated. "So, when you start at the back, there is no way you can follow cars closely or something like that. There is not much we can do. I think we lost a big opportunity. So, yeah, frustration is beyond imagination. But this is the story of the year."
The premature exit halted what had been a modest upturn in performance for Aston Martin following upgrades introduced before the summer break. With technical gremlins striking at the worst possible moment, the team faces an uphill battle during Sunday's main race.
