Yamaha has made a bold move by securing Jorge Martin for its future MotoGP programme, and team boss Paolo Pavesio has revealed the driving factor: Martin “made us feel wanted”.
As Yamaha prepares to part ways with Fabio Quartararo, who will join Honda at the end of the season, the Japanese manufacturer acted swiftly to sign the 2024 MotoGP world champion to spearhead its 850cc project.
“Jorge made us feel wanted. I wanted someone with whom I could be transparent about the project, but also someone who wanted to come to a company that is currently struggling in terms of performance, but is investing heavily and has a great history,” Pavesio told Motorsport.com Italy.
Pavesio added that history does not guarantee future success. However, he sensed that Martin wants to help Yamaha return to prominence. “He has already won the title, and if he manages to do that with us, he puts himself on that list,” he said.
Why Martin, Why Now?
Martin is known for his ability to challenge Ducati’s dominance. In 2024, he beat Francesco Bagnaia to the title while riding for the satellite Pramac team, which is now part of Yamaha’s satellite structure. After a injury-plagued first season with Aprilia, Martin has bounced back strongly and currently leads the championship heading into the flyaway races in the Asia-Pacific.
Martin’s move to Yamaha in 2027 could be seen as a gamble. Yamaha currently sits at the bottom of the standings, while Aprilia is considered the benchmark for performance. However, Pavesio is confident in Martin’s potential. “I believe we have signed a rider who has won a MotoGP world championship, came very close to winning another, and has the talent and speed of the top four or five riders,” he explained.
Pavesio also mentioned that the presence of Gino Borsoi, who knows Martin well, was an advantage. “We believed in the rider. We had the advantage of having Gino, who knows him well,” he said.
With Martin on board, Yamaha hopes to return to the front. The 850cc project will be a test for both parties. Can Martin restore Yamaha’s glory? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Martin has made Yamaha feel wanted.
