Yamaha MotoGP team boss Paolo Pavesio has stated that the premier class must continue to expand under new ownership, while warning that it cannot do so if loyal supporters no longer recognize the core values of the sport.
Liberty Media's massive i4.2 billion takeover in 2024 has driven the championship into fresh directions through calendar expansions, new weekend formats, and aggressive fan engagement initiatives designed to capture a wider global audience.
Highlighting the economic reality of motorcycle racing compared to four-wheel series, Pavesio pointed out that the financial heavy lifting comes directly from manufacturers whose ultimate goal is moving road-going machinery.

He explained that if total investment is set at a benchmark of 100, the contribution from the five premier class manufacturers reaches an astounding 70, emphasizing that the primary driver remains selling bikes to consumers.
Pavesio stated, "Of course, if we could spend a little less, we'd be happy. But, in reality, it's an investment. The important thing is that the sport grows. We must be careful not to develop this sport to such an extent that our fans no longer recognise themselves in it and drift away."
Looking ahead to the sweeping technical regulation changes arriving in 2027, the Yamaha chief believes the new generation of machinery will offer a balanced approach that improves on-track spectacle while remaining appealing to fresh demographics.
He concluded that modifying the technical landscape is not a mistake if handled correctly, serving as a vital opportunity to bring in new enthusiasts without alienating the traditional fanbase that built the sport.
