Yamaha Boss Warns Liberty Media Against Losing Core MotoGP Fans in 2026

Yamaha Racing Managing Director Paolo Pavesio has issued a strong warning that premier class motorcycle racing must tread carefully under new ownership. He emphasized that the aggressive push for new markets and broader audiences must not alienate the loyal fanbase that has sustained the championship for decades.

Ever since the takeover of the championship by the parent company of Formula 1, various strategic shifts have been proposed to revamp the overall appeal and presentation of MotoGP. Among the heavily discussed topics are ambitions to host Grands Prix closer to major metropolitan areas, the elimination of wildcard entries starting in 2027, and discussions behind closed doors regarding a separate grid format specifically for sprint races.

Nevertheless, the Italian executive stressed that these fresh concepts require intelligent management to prevent the series from risking its current audience base. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com Italy, he reiterated his support for progress and modernization, provided that changes are implemented through a structured plan that respects long-standing generations of traditional supporters.

"The evolution of things shouldn’t frighten us if we manage it with a clear and shared idea and strategy," Pavesio noted, highlighting his perspective on modern sporting dynamics. He further underscored that fundamental business differences between single-seaters and motorcycle racing must be kept in mind when plotting the future trajectory of the championship.

Unlike other major series, the financial backbone of motorcycle racing relies heavily on manufacturers whose primary goal is selling street motorcycles. Pavesio pointed out that manufacturers account for a massive share of total investments, meaning that safeguarding the authentic identity of the sport is paramount to ensure fans continue to recognize and embrace it.
