Iker Lecuona spoiled Nicolo Bulega's title party at WorldSBK Cremona, Italy. The Honda rider won Race 1 with a six-second margin over Bulega, while Sam Lowes completed the podium in third.
From the moment the lights went out, Lecuona, who started from pole, took off. He held the lead, while Bulega, needing a win to clinch the title, lost second place to Yari Montella. The pressure was immediately on the Ducati rider.
Montella briefly challenged, but a crash at Turn 13 forced him out of contention. That incident returned Bulega to second, but Lecuona was already too far ahead. The Spanish rider continued to extend his gap, from one second to four, dashing Bulega's hopes of the win he needed.
Behind, the drama continued. Montella crashed again, and Surra, running third, suffered the same fate. Lowes took advantage and moved up to third. Meanwhile, Alvaro Bautista had to settle for a finish outside the points after an incident.
The race got even more interesting when Jake Dixon made a stunning comeback. Starting from 18th, he broke into the top nine and hunted down Axel Bassani. However, all eyes remained on Lecuona, who was untouchable at the front. He took his second career WorldSBK win.
With this result, Bulega must delay his championship dream. He still leads the standings, but the title cannot be secured until Race 2 tomorrow. Lecuona proved he will not give up easily, while Lowes showed consistency with his third podium of the season. Tomorrow's race is expected to be fierce, with Bulega determined to seal the title in front of his home fans.
Bulega's failure to win Race 1 was also influenced by Lecuona's flawless performance. The former MotoGP rider made the most of his pole position and managed his tires well throughout the race. Meanwhile, Bulega, perhaps burdened by the title target, seemed to struggle to maintain his rhythm. However, he still has one more chance to secure the title at Cremona, and he promises to be more aggressive in Race 2.
