Wolff: Mercedes Shifted Focus to 2027 Before Summer

Toto Wolff has admitted that Mercedes have already turned their attention to the future. Amid a near-perfect 2027 season, the team principal revealed that resources were redirected to next year's project before the summer break.

Utter Dominance

The lead in both the drivers' and constructors' standings has never really been in doubt this season. From the outset, Mercedes and Andrea Kimi Antonelli made it clear that rivals would only get scraps. In the 14 grands prix held so far, the Silver Arrows have racked up 10 wins and 10 pole positions—numbers that leave little room for interpretation.

That consistency is reflected in the constructors' table, where Mercedes lead with 503 points, 143 ahead of Ferrari and 197 clear of McLaren. In the drivers' championship, Antonelli and Russell top the standings, with Lewis Hamilton as the closest challenger, 101 points adrift.

Wolff on Long-Term Strategy

Speaking in Madrid, Wolff explained that Mercedes' upgrade package—their first in months—will only arrive at the Malaysian Grand Prix. But back at the factory, work on next season has been underway for a long time.

“For us, 2027 started a while ago. Before the summer we directed resources towards next year. Those were the plans and we are following them, regardless of our position in the championship,” the Austrian manager said.

The statement underscores that Mercedes are not resting on their laurels. They are looking far ahead, laying the groundwork for the next regulatory era. A decision that might sound surprising amid a winning streak, but one that highlights the team's cold, calculated long-term vision.
