James Vowles has spoken out about Williams' tough decision to accept a development compromise for the rest of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with the team's main resources already shifted to 2027.
The call comes after a series of poor results, including the Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit. Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon qualified only 16th and 17th, and Sainz received a three-place grid penalty for impeding another driver, dropping him to 20th on the grid.
In the race, Albon finished 15th, while Sainz retired after 43 laps due to floor damage. "For us, a difficult grand prix. We knew it was going to be difficult going into it," Vowles explained in his post-race Vowles Verdict debrief.
Vowles stressed that the main issue is the lack of performance development on the car for too long. "We haven't added performance to the car for far too long and have fallen back relative to teams around us," he added.
However, Williams is preparing new chassis for the next race in Baku. Two new chassis will be brought to reduce weight below the limit, along with aerodynamic upgrades. "That should be a strong step up in performance for us," Vowles said.
But he doubts the upgrades will be enough to consistently fight for points. "There is a however. The field has moved on so significantly and these upgrades, whilst powerful, simply won't be what we are looking for in order to consistently score points," he admitted.
Williams has already invested heavily in 2027 and beyond. "We've invested a lot already into next year and beyond, and the resultant behind this is that we accept the compromise to this year, and it stems from what happened over the winter, and we weren't able to recuperate to the level we wanted," Vowles concluded.
As a result, the remainder of 2026 will serve as a learning phase and preparation for the new 2027 regulations. The team hopes to return to competitiveness with a stronger foundation.
