Sebastian Vettel says he is open to a return to the Formula 1 paddock but is not actively chasing any position. The four-time world champion insists he is enjoying his time away from the sport, though he remains deeply engaged with its future.
Since retiring at the end of 2022 after two challenging seasons with Aston Martin, Vettel has kept a low profile. In an interview with BBC 5Live, he revealed that while he relishes family life and running a small farm, he still follows F1 closely. "Obviously, I enjoy the time that I have. I think it's a privilege to be in that position with family, but also I run a little farm at home, so looking after that," he said.
Despite not having an active role, Vettel cares deeply about the sport's direction, particularly F1's net zero 2030 goal and the upcoming regulations. "I'm always open for what comes around the corner in terms of maybe a role in the future, but I'm not actively pursuing it. I'm not speaking to teams or individuals and dropping my CV here and there," he stated.
Focus on Sustainability and Personal Projects
Vettel admitted that the topics that occupied his mind in the final years of his career are still present. "Topics around sustainability, around the future, not just for myself, for my children, but for all of us and the future of the sport. That's where it closes the loop and the projects that I've done, some of them visible at the track, others less visible, I'm very much thinking about the ideas that I have for what might come next," he explained.
The German was linked to a potential return to racing at the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans after testing a Porsche Hypercar, but that never materialised. Recently, he drove Michael Schumacher's 2002 Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix in a demonstration run, sparking speculation about a comeback.
However, Vettel insists his focus is not on competitive racing right now. He prefers to enjoy his role as an observer and contributor behind the scenes. "I'm following from the outside with great joy and pleasure," he added.
For now, fans hoping to see Vettel back on the grid may have to wait. But his dedication to the sport's future is undeniable, and a return in a different capacity could still be on the cards.
