Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has hinted at a potential return to the sport, but not as a driver. The German, who retired from full-time racing at the end of 2022, remains open to a role in the future, particularly in areas close to his heart: sustainability and the sport's future.
Speaking on the BBC's Chequered Flag podcast, Vettel explained that he is enjoying his new life as a family man. "Obviously, I enjoy the time that I have. I think it's a privilege to be in that position with family, but I also run a little farm at home, so I'm looking after that," he said. Despite his absence from the grid, Vettel continues to follow F1 closely, most recently tuning into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
The 39-year-old made it clear that he is not actively seeking a job in F1. "I'm not speaking to teams or individuals and dropping my CV here and there, but following from the outside with great joy and pleasure," he added. However, he remains open to what the future might hold, especially in matters of sustainability, which became increasingly important to him during his later years in F1.
Vettel has been a vocal advocate for environmental causes, both within motorsport and beyond. Since retiring, he has continued to champion sustainability initiatives. "The topics that have been in my head the final years of my active career are still very much there and present. So topics around sustainability, around the future, not just for myself, for my children, but for all of us and the future of the sport," he explained.
He also revealed that the projects he has undertaken, some visible at the track and others less so, remain a key focus. "That's where it closes the loop and the projects that I've done, some of them visible at the track, others less visible, I'm very much thinking about the ideas that I have for what might come next," Vettel said.
A return to F1 in a non-racing role could be a breath of fresh air for the sport, especially with the 2030 net-zero goal and new regulations on the horizon. Vettel's experience and commitment to sustainability could bring a new perspective to a team or even F1 as a whole. While nothing is confirmed, his comments offer hope to fans that he will continue to contribute to the sport.
As a fan favourite, Vettel's every move is eagerly anticipated. Whether he will actually return to F1 in a new capacity or focus on his personal projects remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Vettel will never be far from the sport that made him a legend.
