George Russell's victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was anything but straightforward. The pressure from Max Verstappen in the closing stages forced Russell to dig deep, and one analyst described it as "nightmare fuel".
Alex Brundle, F1 TV pundit, likened Verstappen's late charge to something terrifying for the Mercedes driver. He pointed out that with nothing to lose, Verstappen was a relentless force.
"The other thing is you think George Russell's got nothing to lose at this stage in the championship, Verstappen properly has nothing to lose apart from the opportunity to take a race victory," Brundle said on the F1 Nation podcast. "That is like nightmare fuel, seeing Max Verstappen skidding up, tapping walls on a set of soft tyres behind you, just desperate to make your life as difficult as possible."
Russell admitted the race "got a bit tense" towards the end. He revealed that a yellow flag on the final lap almost cost him the win. "I backed off, and when I went back on the power, I had no turbo, so when I had no power, that's when he almost passed me," Russell told Sky Sports F1.
The win in Baku closed the gap to his team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 66 points. Antonelli leads with 302 points, Russell sits second with 236, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton is third with 199 points. The battle at the top is intensifying.
The yellow flag incident and the loss of turbo on Russell's car highlighted how thin the margin between victory and defeat can be in Baku. With Verstappen breathing down his neck, any small mistake could have been costly. Russell managed it, but it served as a reminder that in F1, nothing is certain until the chequered flag.
With this result, Russell keeps his championship hopes alive, while Verstappen showed he won't go down without a fight. The next race will be another test for both drivers, and we'll see if such pressure resurfaces.
