Tensions reached a boiling point in the Formula 1 paddock ahead of this weekend's race as Max Verstappen launched a sharp counterattack against Circuit of the Americas boss Bobby Epstein. The feud erupted after the Dutch driver openly criticized the track conditions in Austin, labeling them unacceptable and completely out of control for a premier world-class racing event.
Prior to this confrontation, the reigning world champion revealed that the severe bumps across the asphalt were forcing him to take painkillers just to cope with persistent back issues directly caused by the punishing impacts of the circuit. He argued that the current state of the track infrastructure poses a real physical challenge to the drivers.
However, Verstappen's grievances were initially dismissed by Epstein, who insisted that the Austin venue was in remarkably good shape and claimed that only one problematic area remained at Turn 1. Epstein stated that circuit management was unaware of that specific issue until race week, adding that he believed the driver would be surprised by how many bumps had actually been successfully removed.

Upon being informed of Epstein's dismissive remarks, Verstappen was visibly unimpressed and issued a bold challenge, inviting the circuit boss to climb into his cockpit and experience the brutal reality firsthand. The fiery exchange highlighted the growing friction between drivers and circuit management regarding track safety and maintenance standards.
I invite him to drive my car, the four-time world champion told Dutch media following Saturday's qualifying session. I think he'd have to get out after five laps and wouldn't be able to walk anymore.
Verstappen firmly rejected the notion that Turn 1 was the sole trouble spot, pointing out that equally hazardous bumps plagued the high-speed section nestled between Turns 4 and 5. He argued that underlying ground conditions should never serve as an excuse for a track surface that subjects high-performance machinery and driver spines to such violent forces at immense speeds.
There are also big bumps in a high-speed section between Turns 4 and 5, he argued. The ground underneath the track cannot be used as an excuse. A car should not have to take such a heavy impact at that kind of speed. I'm taking painkillers here, which is something I don't normally need. And I shouldn't need to, either.
As the weekend progresses toward lights out, all eyes will be locked on the front row of the grid. Verstappen is set to line up in second place, sharing the front row alongside pole-sitter Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who stands on the verge of clinching the world championship crown should victory and favorable results fall his way.
