Max Verstappen is not giving up. The Red Bull driver has set a personal target for this season: to secure at least one victory in Formula 1 2026. He made this clear ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, a venue where rain often plays a decisive role.
In Baku, Verstappen came agonizingly close to ending his win drought. He finished within a whisker of George Russell after a tense duel to the line. Though the win eluded him, the performance signaled that Red Bull can still fight at certain tracks. “In recent weeks we've had good results, but I want to win. That's why I'm here. I want to win at least one race this year,” Verstappen said in a press conference.
But the mission won't be easy. Mercedes, Red Bull's main rival, is expected to bring a major upgrade package starting from the Malaysian GP. Additionally, they will introduce a new power unit with ADUO technology. This combination is said to further narrow the chances for other teams to steal a win from the Brackley squad. This situation means Verstappen's chances hinge on other factors, such as extreme weather or clever strategy.

Sepang could be an opportunity. The circuit is notorious for sudden tropical downpours that often throw races into chaos. If rain falls, the performance advantage of the cars can be neutralized, and a driver with sharp instincts like Verstappen has a chance to shine. “We know Sepang can be a lottery, but we're ready to take advantage,” he added.
On another note, Verstappen also commented on Fernando Alonso's contract extension with Aston Martin until 2027. “Fernando is a racing animal. I'm happy he's staying in F1. He's a source of inspiration in terms of motivation. Me like him? I think I'll race until I'm 40, but with a commitment not comparable to his,” Verstappen said.
For Verstappen, October is a busy month. On the only weekend without F1, he will compete in the GTWC at Portimao. This shows that the Dutchman never stops honing his skills across different racing disciplines.
Will Verstappen actually secure a win this year? Only time will tell. One thing is clear: his fighting spirit remains undiminished.
