Tension briefly gripped the Red Bull garage as Max Verstappen faced a stewards' investigation at the Singapore Grand Prix. The incident unfolded midway through SQ1 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where a crash triggered single yellow flags. Debris was left strewn across the track from the ailing machine before the situation was eventually upgraded to a red flag. Amidst the chaos, the reigning world champion was caught overtaking Lewis Hamilton directly underneath a yellow-flag light panel.

According to official penalty guidelines from the governing body, passing under single yellow-flag conditions during a qualifying session typically carries a severe five-place grid penalty. This potential sanction threatened to dismantle the Dutchman's starting advantage after he had successfully secured the quickest effort in SQ3 ahead of his rivals. However, an official document released by the stewards ultimately cleared the star driver of any wrongdoing, allowing him to retain his hard-earned pole position for the upcoming sprint race.

During the thorough investigation, the panel reviewed testimonies from the drivers involved and examined telemetry data in profound detail. The stewards' document detailed that car 3 was exiting Turn 7 on a push lap when the single yellow flag was displayed. Car 44 ahead had been warned of the approaching rival, slowing down and moving to the right to clear the racing line. Despite these precautionary measures, the overtake occurred prior to Turn 8 while both cars remained within the active yellow flag sector.

Telemetry data proved instrumental in clearing the Red Bull charger from the threat of a grid drop. The stewards confirmed that upon exiting Turn 7 and spotting the warning, the driver lifted fully off the throttle within approximately 40 meters of entering the zone. Meanwhile, the Mercedes ahead was actively braking and had reduced its speed to less than 60km/h at the exact moment of the overlap, creating a massive speed differential despite the trailing car also initiating braking procedures.

The panel expressed satisfaction that the reaction to the yellow flag was appropriate, noting that the speed at the overtake point was roughly 70km/h slower than normal push lap speeds in the same session. Furthermore, the driver explained that taking sudden evasive action to avoid the pass entirely would have required exceptionally heavy braking, potentially creating an unsafe situation on the narrow street circuit.

While the stewards formally determined that a technical breach of the yellow-flag overtaking regulation did occur, they accepted that the maneuver was an unfortunate consequence of the significant closing speed differential. Consequently, no penalty was imposed, preserving the competitive integrity of the starting grid for the weekend's action.
