The second practice session for the 2026 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix delivered high drama as Charles Leclerc kept Ferrari on top of the timesheets. Despite a messy session that featured multiple off-track excursions for the Monegasque driver, the Scuderia maintained a strong competitive pace throughout the afternoon running.
However, the main talking point of the session centered around a bizarre and fiery on-track collision between Max Verstappen and Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson. Verstappen, heading straight out on soft tyres after sitting out FP1, dived inside Lawson at Turn 12 before the pair collided at the right-hander of Turn 14, scattering debris across the circuit.
"The incident shattered the Red Bull’s left-hand-side bargeboard and a red flag stoppage was required to clear the debris," as officials swiftly neutralized the session to clear the track. Once action resumed, the field rushed back out to complete their qualifying simulations.

Leclerc ultimately pulled together a clean lap of 1m17.827s to secure the fastest time, edging out the chasing pack. Meanwhile, reliability woes hit the other side of the Ferrari garage as an engine problem cut short the running for their stable.
The battle at the front sets up an intense weekend of action at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Read our in-depth analysis and check the latest updates on track right here.
