Frederic Vasseur is not on the ropes. At least, that’s the message the Ferrari team principal wants to send amid a storm of speculation surrounding his seat after a disappointing Italian Grand Prix. Instead of fighting rumours, the Frenchman chose to keep his focus on the job at hand: steering the Scuderia back to winning ways.
Monza left a wound. Not just because of the final result, but also the strategy calls and driver management that raised eyebrows. That’s where the rumours started. Some sources suggested Vasseur’s position was under close scrutiny from Ferrari president John Elkann. Sacking talk emerged, even though his contract was only extended in July 2025.
Vasseur didn’t flinch. He even mocked the intensity of the speculation. “Some say I’ll be fired this weekend, or that I was fired last night. We’ve won two races and we can win more. We know the next steps, and I’m focusing my energy on that,” he told media, including Motorsport, as quoted by FormulaPassion. “Pressure is part of my job. I don’t want to waste energy on that.”
That statement also served as a response to Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, former Ferrari president, who said Vasseur was “lonely”. Vasseur refused to be drawn into personal polemics. “It’s not my job to judge whether I have the President’s support or not. What’s clear is that the communication channel is always open and constructive,” he stated firmly. He then added, “Almost every race weekend, we have representatives from the top of Maranello—from John Elkann, Benedetto Vigna, to Piero Ferrari. That’s a great signal for everyone working in the team, both at the track and in the factory.”
For Vasseur, the presence of top brass isn’t just a formality. It’s tangible support he feels firsthand. When external pressure mounts, having Ferrari’s number ones around is a reminder that the team is on the right path. He also stressed that the two wins this season are no fluke, but a foundation for the next step.
Yet behind the confident words, the real test awaits. Ferrari must bounce back from the Monza slump. Vasseur knows all too well that at Maranello, results are the only currency. Pressure from the president may not come as a formal warning, but public and media expectations remain a burden to manage carefully.
Interestingly, Vasseur doesn’t shy away from the fact that his seat is hot. He admits pressure is part of the job. The difference is, he refuses to get caught up in drama. “We have a clear idea to take a step forward. I’m focused on that,” he concluded. With communication to the president wide open, Vasseur seems determined to prove that the solution isn’t scapegoating, but working harder on track.
For the tifosi, Vasseur’s words might be reassuring. But as always, proof only comes on asphalt. The next race will be the real test: can Ferrari turn pressure into performance, or will it crumble?
