Triumph Unveils Dedicated Moto2 Engine for 2027 Season

Triumph has announced a new engine developed specifically for Moto2, set to debut in the 2027 season. This marks a significant shift from the current approach, where the 765cc triple used since 2019 was derived directly from the Street Triple 765 road bike.

The new engine, whose displacement remains undisclosed, is designed from the ground up for racing, not adapted from a production unit. Triumph reports a six percent increase in peak power and a two-kilogram weight reduction compared to the current engine, thanks to a redesigned cylinder head with improved valvetrain, higher-flow ports, a new combustion chamber, and revised crankcases and internals.

This development has immediate implications for Moto2 chassis manufacturers, who must revise their designs to accommodate the new engine's air intake positioning and mounting points. This presents a technical challenge for teams and builders ahead of 2027, potentially reshaping the competitive balance in the intermediate class.

Triumph's Chief Product Officer, Steve Sargeant, emphasized that the new engine has undergone rigorous testing to ensure reliability and performance. "We have introduced more power, gearbox changes, and now a brand-new race engine that will power Moto2 from 2027," he said. He also highlighted updates to the cylinders that improve airflow, compression ratios, and torque.

Alfonso Cartujo, MotoGP Sporting Director, welcomed the move as proof of Triumph's commitment to Moto2. "Their ambition to evolve and improve continues to grow, and it's proven on track as Moto2 only gets better. Now, it will get even more powerful," he stated. This underscores the strong partnership between Triumph and Dorna in advancing the middleweight class.

With a lighter, more powerful engine, Moto2 competition is expected to intensify. Teams will need to adapt to the new engine's characteristics, which could alter the hierarchy in the class from 2027. This announcement also highlights a trend of manufacturers developing purpose-built racing engines for world championships.
