Toto Wolff Slams F1 CapEx Rule Proposal and Warns of Engineering Talent Drain

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has strongly rejected the financial regulation overhaul proposed by Williams boss James Vowles, comparing the sliding-scale spending idea to endurance racing's Balance of Performance metrics.

Speaking during the official FIA press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix, Wolff made his stance clear against allowing artificial catch-up mechanisms tied to championship standings into Formula 1.

'Personally, I don't like the concept of adjustment based on some positions. BoP for me is like a red mist,' Wolff stated, voicing major concerns over introducing performance-based infrastructure spending allowances.

While dismissing the sliding-scale CapEx proposal, Wolff acknowledged a severe human resources crisis triggered by the current budget cap constraints. He warned that depressed salaries are driving elite engineering talent away from the paddock toward hedge funds and tech firms.

'Now you can get someone into a Formula 1 team today on enthusiasm, but at a certain stage, when after five, six or seven years and you have a PhD, your salaries are still depressed versus a tech company or a hedge fund or investment banking, that becomes a problem,' Wolff explained.
