Toto Wolff made light of the situation after the race

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff joked that he will put a cushion under the seat of Andrea Kimi Antonelli following his repeated track limits offences during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.

The young Italian driver managed to escape a standard five-second time penalty despite committing four separate track limits violations on his way to securing a hard-fought third-place finish at the Marina Bay circuit, moving him ever closer to his maiden F1 world championship crown.

Race stewards ultimately let him off the hook for his fourth and final infringement because he was actively battling a lingering braking issue aboard his W17 machine and was judged to have gained no competitive advantage by running wide at Turn 7.

Addressing the humorous side of the situation over the team radio immediately after the chequered flag, Wolff quipped, "Kimi, well driven. Well done. Maybe we need to have a little cushion under your a**e to have you sit higher with the track limits, but it was very good."

Speaking further to reporters gathered in Singapore, the Mercedes team principal delivered another lighthearted remark while heavily praising the 20-year-old's impressive on-track maturity. "I have a good strategy, I'm going to put a pillow from the hotel under his butt, so he can actually see the road, because I think he can't see it," Wolff told the media.

"So yeah, under his arse so he can see. That stresses us. Half the race we already have three strikes, but it also shows that he's pushing the limits a lot. I think how he's driven that is mature and good. We talked about it and he said, ‘I've just got to keep my calm here and make sure that I finish the race’. So, handling a difficult car at that stage and trying to develop it and learn, it's good," he concluded.
