Heading into the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, Kimi Antonelli stands on the brink of motorsport history with a golden opportunity to secure his maiden Formula 1 drivers' title, needing just a ninth-place finish on Sunday to become the youngest champion ever. Meanwhile, Mercedes also mathematically holds an outside chance to wrap up the constructors' championship this weekend, though that feat requires out-scoring Ferrari by a significant margin.
Despite closing in on a coveted double title success for the first time in six years, team principal Toto Wolff insisted that his squad cannot afford any slip in focus at this late and demanding stage of the 2026 racing campaign. The Silver Arrows boss emphasized that internal mindsets must remain completely locked in to ensure all operational targets are executed cleanly without complacency.
"The championships are moving closer, but our mindset does not change," Wolff stated regarding the team's rigorous approach to the championship climax. "Thinking about the outcome won't help us achieve it. We will stay disciplined, take each session as it comes, and concentrate on doing the fundamentals well."

As part of their meticulous preparations for the Mexican round, Wolff confirmed a technical lineup adjustment for the opening practice session, noting: "That includes Fred [Vesti], who will take over George Russell's car for FP1. He is an important member of our team and we know we can rely on him to deliver precise, useful feedback as we work through Friday's programme."
Beyond the title euphoria, Mercedes enters the weekend carrying a lingering technical puzzle regarding their latest upgrade package, following sharply contrasting fortunes between their two drivers during a victorious outing in Austin last time out where Antonelli dominated to claim his ninth win while his teammate struggled.
"Austin demonstrated the potential we have with our latest update, but it also highlighted where we still have work to do," Wolff concluded, addressing the aero and setup challenges. "We have added performance, but accessing it consistently is proving more challenging. George suffered particularly with that last weekend and, as a team, our focus is on understanding why and helping get the car into a better window."
